Energy Storage
Recharging a train requires a large amount of power in a short timescales, which is disruptive and costly using existing distribution systems. A localised steady-state, energy storage system will supply intensive charging energy, when required. It is more cost effective and will ensure the network is not overwhelmed.
System
The system is fully automatic and safe. It transfers energy to the trains using a contact system, which de-energises before the departure process. We are fully familiar with this system, which is under consideration for potential UK use. A different, non-contact inductive system for battery bus fleets may also be suitable.
Rolling Stock
Battery trains have superior performance and acceleration than diesel trains and have much reduced, simpler maintenance. Cost of ownership of battery systems and electric traction equipment is significantly less than other energy sources (it is half the price of hydrogen and diesel) and significantly less than 25kV infrastructure.
